Grey Jade Trade and Invest 69 has contracted 300 beef back-grounding farmers operating in 300 land reform farms across all regions of the Eastern Cape. The land reform farmers are supplied with light weaned calves averaging 180kg to 200kg. The light weaned calves are placed on back-grounding pastures and allocated small rations of highly nutritious supplements until attaining a weight of 280kg.
Approximately, 42% of the cattle population is owned by Black smallholder farmers, who contribute only 5% of slaughter stock. The red meat industry currently has little participation from the Black smallholder farmers, and this intervention seeks to address this anomaly. The project currently capacitates and empowers 6,000 Black communal farmers to become sustainable commercial beef producers and participate in the beef value chain.
